    Hand-Formed Metalwork for Automotive Applications

Metal shaping is the core skill behind everything we do at Mohnson Fab. It's the ability to take a flat sheet of steel or aluminum and transform it into a three-dimensional panel with compound curves, crowned surfaces, and precise edges. Whether we're replicating a factory panel that's no longer available, creating a custom piece for a hot rod build, or forming a repair section that matches the surrounding body work, metal shaping is how it gets done.

This isn't something you learn overnight. Our metal shaping skills were developed through formal training with Fay Butler — one of the most respected names in the craft — combined with over 20 years of daily shop work. That combination of structured education and real-world experience is what allows us to take on complex shapes confidently and deliver consistent results.

The Right Tool for Every Curve

Different shapes require different approaches, and we have the equipment to handle them all. The English wheel is our primary shaping tool for smooth, sweeping curves and large crowned panels. The power hammer handles heavier forming and faster material movement when roughing in shapes. The planishing hammer smooths and refines surfaces after initial forming. The Pullmax handles edge trimming, joggling, and detail work. And the metal brake creates clean, precise bends for flanges, hems, and straight-line features.

Every panel starts as a flat pattern, developed from measurements taken directly from the car or from templates. The metal is then progressively shaped through multiple passes, checking the fit against the car at each stage. It's a patient process — rushing it leads to stretched metal and poor fit. Serving metal shaping needs from Norfolk to Grand Island and across the Midwest, we take the time to shape it correctly — meaning less filler, better panel gaps, and metalwork that holds up over the life of the vehicle.
